1922/23 Confiscation of the painting "Mädchen vor dem Spiegel (Girl Before the Mirror)" (1921); Dix is charged with "indecency" in Berlin State Court (expert testimony by Max Slevogt and Karl Hofer, among others). Acquitted in this and in a second proceeding in Darmstadt for "Salon II" (1921).

1922/23 productive phase of work with watercolors. 1923 begins work on the "Der Krieg (War)" cycle of etchings and completes the painting "Der Schützengraben (The Trench)" that causes one of the biggest art scandals of the era. First individual show in the gallery Graphisches Kabinett I. B. Neumann.
