August 1914 drafted as auxiliary reservist. Training on heavy machine gun February 1915 in Bautzen. In September 1915 he volunteers for the front. Until Dezember 1918 Deployment as a machine-gunner and platoon leader in Champagne province, on the Somme, in Artois and in Flanders, as well as a period on the Eastern front in 1917. Dix is one of the few German artists who experienced the First World War almost without interruption on the front lines and as a fateful "natural phenomenon" (Naturereignis).
